Welcome to the Pandemic Planning for Schools of Nursing web site.

What role will nursing students play in your community in the case of a pandemic? What role will faculty play?

How will students be compensated for the work they do to help during a pandemic? Who will be responsible if they fall ill when working during a pandemic?

Will they be protected under the provincial regulatory body in your province? What about liability coverage for your students? Who is responsible?

These are just some of the questions you need to consider when thinking pandemic planning in your school.

The purpose of this site is to share with schools of nursing and other interested stakeholders a summary of resources and presentations that were recorded during a Pan-Canadian meeting regarding pandemic planning issues for schools of nursing. The meeting was held immediately before the CASN general meeting in Victoria, B.C. on Nov. 15th 2006 and was attended by numerous CASN members from across Canada. The meeting was co-sponsored by the Public Health Agency of Canada and CASN and coordinated by the CASN Community Health Education Sub-committee.

Five nursing and medical experts representing local, regional and provincial perspectives presented on pandemic planning focusing on issues relevant for schools of nursing in Canada. These presentations were extremely well received; therefore, we felt it was important to share them with faculty, schools and other stakeholders across the country.

Although they do not provide all the answers, we expect that these resources will help prompt discussions with your local health departments and others about pandemic planning issues in relation to faculty and students in your school of nursing.
